Snacks for Jesus

Sometimes switching up a detail can give us a fresh take on the dynamic of very familiar characters. Though this passage is a famous interaction featuring women, I made the characters two brothers – so rather than having Mary & Martha, we have Mario and Marty. The change allows for both comedy and new insight on the story.

We usually throw some flour on the guy playing Marty. Whatever you do, I hope you’ll enjoy this. The idea of us in our little kitchens of life trying to make something to impress or supply the God of the universe is inherently pretty funny.

Excerpt:

MARTY D’you get the yardwork finished, bro?

MARIO Yeah. I put in a couple more tomato plants and that Japanese maple. And weeded. And put up the rabbit fence. Ya know, while I was out there I thought of like, thirty things I wanna ask Jesus while he’s here. D’you think of anything you wanna ask him about? Y’know, like gravity? Love? Biology?

MARTY What about mowing?

MARIO Mowing? That’s kind of a dumb question.

MARTY Dude, Jesus is coming over. Mow the lawn.

MARIO Who cares how long the grass is?

MARTY I care. Look. How often do you have Jesus in your house? Dude, this is important.

MARIO Dude, Jesus made the grass.

MARTY So?
