I wrote this for Bruce Kuhn and Daniel Jones to perform as an intro to Bruce’s well-known “Gospel of Luke”. It struck me that before hearing the whole gospel in King’s English, we would do best to explore why we would want to do so. The character of Zaccheus, who wanted to see Jesus up-close, was a perfect embodiment of that question.

I love this piece. Lines are traded quickly and the rhythm needs to keep a good pace. It’s funny in many places – don’t shrink from the humour! I usually have two actors perform on ladders to give us some blocking options, both up and down. And this piece is notoriously difficult to memorize, so I have usually had actors perform it on book – which has never hindered the sketch’s effectiveness. Enjoy!

Excerpt:

So…when Jesus went around teaching…

When Jesus went around teaching, he taught crowds.

He taught such huge crowds.

Really big crowds, it’s true…

People wanted to see him,

To see him up-close, to hear him – What was that like,

To hear him up close.

To hear and see him, face-to-face?

Do you ever wonder at it—

Do you ever wonder what it would be like

What would it be like?

To get that close to Jesus,
