I was studying or heard a sermon on – something – Psalm 119, about how it was an acrostic, going through the Hebrew alphabet and listing reasons to engage with God’s Word. It was striking to me that Israel contemplated the gift of the Word so thoroughly, that they recognized the Word as God’s self-expression, the way God interacted with them in their midst.

It also struck me how much we don’t think of the Word as active, we don’t think much about it. We rarely recognize the Word as dynamic. How did we get to the place where it’s a thing over there in a gold-edged book read out loud by someone in a robe…but not something fun and engaging, thrilling and challenging?

I thought enough about it that I decided to try to write a meditation on the Word and see what happened. Here it is.
