The Partner

$12.99

After studying it intensely and teaching it for years, I wrote a couple of full-length treatments of Genesis 1-3. They are full plays, but include a scene in which a partner is made for the lone groundling (“adam” means, approximately, groundling). I had many requests for a wedding-friendly version of that scene so in time I developed one with its own script and a small cast and playing space appropriate for a marriage ceremony.

This piece requires good memorization but it’s quite accessible. If at all possible, get your actors some practice time in the space where the service will be held so they can plan and rehearse good movement.

WOMAN

It’s all so weird. I mean, I don’t remember that much, except I opened my eyes and, there I was. I was there, I mean. Or here. I guess. And then Yahweh Elohim said, Okay, there’s your partner. And, well, I looked over—

GROUNDLING

I was taking this awesome nap. It was, ya know, one of those kind of warm, cool, perfect afternoons—well, ‘cause it was all perfect, pretty much—and we had this long conversation about…Okay, wait. This is complicated. First, I got made. Yahweh Elohim, he’s like this maker—an artist, sort of. And he made me. I mean, I know that sounds weird—but the dude’s amazing. He just grabs some ground, right? And he does this, like, playdough deal with it, and blasts air into my nose to make me breathe, I guess. And then—zam! It’s me. I’m me. I mean, I’m alive. So anyway, I’m alive—and that’s cool. But it was kind of…I dunno. I mean, I was the only me, and there was no one else like me at all, anywhere. So Yahweh Elohim, he says, Well, you need a partner. And I like my parts the way they are. But he’s all, No, not a part—a partner. It’s different. A partner— is someone you hang with; you can eat mangos together and stuff. It’s cool. So I said, Yeah, a partner, that sounds good.
