Psalm 19

PSALM 19

Since the psalms were written to be read aloud or even sung, I like creating staged versions of them that help us experience them in a way that might approximate the way Israelites first heard them. This is one of my favourites, involving four actors, a pray-er and a singer.

Lines are written to overlap, not calamitously but dancing together, sometimes matching, dipping, connecting and separating. I love free singing, so I ask the singer to come up with an ad lib tune (accompanied or not on guitar) but you could also write a particular tune if you like.

This was written for a worship service and when we performed it the guest speaker was completely overwhelmed. I’m always happy to write this sort of piece, because I feel like it helps us back into hearing God’s Word freshly, fully, and in ways that might change our hearts.
