Laundromat: 2:00 a.m.

$12.99

John’s story of Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well is a popular sketch subject and sermon text. In this sketch we cover the story from a contemporary perspective. Where would a woman like her go? We don’t have wells. In what other gathering areas might someone like her hide in plain sight, avoiding others?

How about a Laundromat, way past hours?

This is one of my favourite-ever sketches. You can see a performance of it with Yasmin Ravard-Andresen and Daniel Jones below.

Excerpt:

WOMAN
(not looking up from folding boxers, t-shirts, etc.; curtly) Laundromat’s closed.

MAN
(dry and tired) Uh, yeah…Do you know, is there a Coke machine in here, or something? I’ve been walking the city; I’m parched.

WOMAN
What are you doing hiking around the city at 2:00 a.m. in the first place?

MAN
What are you doing in the laundromat at 2:00 a.m.?
Pause for her response of silence, like she could tell him but decides she won’t.

WOMAN
Look. There’s no Coke machine here, and the laundromat, like I said before, is closed. See ya, bud.
