When we read the Bible and hear its stories we get used to hearing certain things. It can get so we lose sight of the realness of what Bible characters were experiencing. We forget, they didn’t have back pocket Bibles or study tools. They didn’t have the hindsight from which we benefit in Bible study. They just had themselves, their relationships with God, and their best effort to make sense of it all.

This dialogue between Joseph and his theoretical brother Asa is an effort to get inside the story, to touch the experience he and Mary might have been having. It’s a fresh take on Christmas and a nice way into discussing taking risks, hearing God’s voice…

ASA What happened? You just—

JOSEPH I—it wasn’t me.

ASA Wait. What?
